In 1648, a group English Puritans arrived in Eleuthera from Bermuda to escape religious persecution. They became known as the Eleutheran Adventurers. The Adventurers established a settlement on Harbour Island. The historic village of Dunmore Town captures the charm of yesteryear and is sprinkled with fun pubs and restaurants, from popular fish shacks to elegant dining.
The Loyalist homes on Harbour Island are Colonial gems. While somewhat cramped inside, they are an artist’s delight, painted in soft pastels, such as peal grey with soft pink shutters, or turquoise against white. These cottages come with a hefty price tag.
Some of the biggest names in international business have built large luxury homes overlooking the beach and there are luxury condos for sale on the harbour side. There are also a fair number of middle income homes built by the descendants of the settlers, but don’t expect to find middle income prices.
