Giving Thanks in the Bahamas

Although Thanksgiving isn't a holiday in the Bahamas, it's celebrated far and wide across the islands.
And why not?
What a wonderful idea to get together with family and friends to give thanks.
And so many Bahamas homes come alive as people from all walks of life gather together to share this special occasion.
Our dining room tables groan from the weight of platters of roast turkey and trimmings, ham, peppery mac and cheese, peas n' rice and slaw, mashed potato and plantain. We island people like our starches!
We raise a toast to our friends to the north, many of whom join us in our Bahamas homes to celebrate.
While we give thanks, we like to pause and reflect on our lot in life and ask for a blessing for the poor and distressed everywhere.
We ask ourselves how we can help others who are not as fortunate as we are.
And in this troubled world, what can we do to promote global peace?
We're mindful of all the extraordinary beauty that surrounds us in these lovely islands of the Bahamas and of the tranquillity in our group of Family Islands.
We're grateful for the sanctity of our homes here in the Bahamas.
Truly home is where the heart is.
