Nassau swimmers got more than they bargained for on the weekend when a 14-foot Great Hammerhead Shark put in a surprise appearance at Montagu Beach.

What a magnificent sight to see this beauty lazily cruising along the shoreline, perhaps in search of a stingray lunch.

As news of “Big Boy” spread over social media, nearby Nassau homeowners jogged down to the beach while others drove there in hopes of catching a glimpse of the creature.

A number of people donned diving gear and swam with the shark. What an amazing experience!

The shark's hammer shaped head isn't suitable for attacking humans or large animals so the divers were able to enjoy their shark encounter.

Sharks are protected in the Bahamas, but the Great Hammerhead population is endangered globally because they are heavily fished.

These beautiful animals are extremely important to the ocean's eco system, promoting healthier coral reefs and greater fish diversity.

Here in the Bahamas, the Hammerhead helps protect the conch population by keeping the stingray population is check.

There was some talk that Big Boy should be killed.

But let's remember. Sharks are protected here in the Bahamas.

We have our Bahamas real estate. Let these animals enjoy the sanctuary of their home in the Bahamas as well.
