Montagu Beach Nassau – Pretty as a Picture!

Have you visited Montagu Beach lately?

If you're a local or a visitor who frequents Nassau, the chances are you have.

Since the beach was replenished with sand and the park landscaped a couple of years ago, Montagu Beach has reclaimed its rightful spot as a popular swimming and recreational area.

The wide, white sandy beach is easily accessible by foot or car. A smaller, shallow water beach – perfect for young children – lies immediately to the west.

The beach and the four cannon Fort Montagu are the centrepiece of the Montagu Beach Park.

The fort was built in the 1700s to protect the eastern entrance of Nassau harbour from an invasion by the Spanish.

The park provides a happy blend of recreation and culture.

The colourful fresh fish, fruit and vegetable market lies to the east. The market's popular with visitors who get a free lesson in the local lingo – “Hey Mon!”

From time to time, it's the venue for sailing regattas and other fun festivals.

There are usually a couple of food stands in the park, offering local fare such as tasty conch (pronounced konk) fritters deep fried in oil over an open charcoal fire.

The Sky Juice stand sells fresh coconut water straight from the coconut with a straw.

Montagu Beach stretches from the Nassau Yacht Club in the west almost to Dick's Point in the east. Stately homes overlook the bay and a number of middle and upper-middle income neighbourhoods are within walking distance.

This is a nice area to invest in a home in Nassau. It's only minutes to town or Paradise Island by car, but within easly walking distance to the beach.
