We're island people and we love the outdoors. We love to chill and grill, have outdoor gatherings and ‘catch the cool' – sit under shade trees – with a good book and a cold drink.
So when you're searching for your ideal home in the Bahamas, you'll want to keep this in mind.
Bahamas real estate is available in all shapes and sizes. The most prized real estate is seaside or has a sea view. If you're inland, there's a lot you can do to bring out the island flavor at your home.
If you can afford to, you'll want to buy a home with a swimming pool, or install one. Even a small cocktail pool is great. If you're budget doesn't stretch to a pool, no problem. You can create a wonderful waterscape with a pond and lush vegetation. Add to that a small sprinkler system and you'll not only have the sound of running water, you'll also attract tropical birds looking for a bath.
One of the most beautiful birds in the Bahamas is the humming bird. Plan bright red plants, such as fire cracker and hibiscus, and watch them come.
A very important feature in Bahamas real estate is a patio or deck. This is really the centre of activity. You'll want deck chairs, a grill and tubs of flowers and plants. We like wind chimes and mobiles made of sea shells.
Although it may sound odd given our warm climate, many Bahamas homes have outdoor pot belly fire places. There's nothing like a fire in the evening. It creates a special ambience and the kids will love roasting hotdogs and marshmallows over it.
