Nassau International Airport Upgrade

Bahamas visitors bound for the U.S. should notice some significant improvements at Nassau International Airport starting in the first quarter of 2011.
It's part of an airport redevelopment plan to boost the Bahamas experience. So far, more than $10 million has been spent locally on various aspects of the design, engineering and consultation, according to Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham.
The general contractor of Nassau International Airport, Ledo of Canada, expects 73 percent of its work force will be from the Bahamas.
As soon as the first phase of the redevelopment project opens for U.S.-bound passengers during the first quarter of 2011, work is expected to start on converting the existing US departure terminal into the new international terminal.
The redevelopment project is expected to last four years.
Ingraham says that upon completion, the airport (also known as Sir Lynden Pindling International Airport), will provide the infrastructure the Bahamas needs to prosper.
Ingraham said the new US terminal will be one of the best and most modern airport facilities in this part of the world.
And he said it will become a source of national pride.
Bit by bit, the old airport has been spruced up as part of an interim development plan.
