We've just finished a visit to the upper Exuma Cays, which host possibly the most beautiful real estate in the Bahamas. The cruising grounds are exquisite, perhaps the best in the world.
This 365-island chain starts approximately 40 miles southeast of Nassau and stretches for more than 90 miles. The Exuma sea is dazzling, ranging in shades of shimmering turquoises and sea greens to startling cobalt blue. It's sprinkled with sand banks and coral reefs and the cays (pronounced ‘keys') are jewels scattered throughout.
The sea is so clear that it's easy to spot the fish swimming below, or the purple and yellow sea fans on the coral reefs.
We spent most of our 10 day trip in the beautiful Highborne Cay area. The Highborne Cay marina is extremely popular with locals and visiting yachtsmen. It boasts a very sheltered harbour, gorgeous beaches and a ridge that offers spectacular views.
The Highborne managers, Ian and Barbara McBeth, and the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, and go out of their way to make sure your stay is special. The marina has fuel, good RO water, nice shower rooms, internet access and a food store that provides the basics, along with luxury items such as prime rib, lamb loin chops and fresh vegetables. There are also beautiful native gift items.
When the captain of our boat wasn't in the engine room, he took us on wonderful excursions and kept us well fed with conch, lobster and fish from his favorite spots.
We spent lazy days on hammocks at Highborne reading books and when we wanted action, the sea was our playground.
We visited the iguanas at Allan's Cay, fed the sharks that weren't interested in the swimmers a few hundred feet away and shelled on the sand banks. We grilled and chilled on Saddle Cay and dived on the small plane wreck in Norman's Pond – a relic from the drug smuggling era of the 1980s.
The plane's becoming a reef with coral starting to grow over it and bright coloured fish darting in and out.
The highlight of our trip – as always - was exploring the fragile creeks of Shroud Cay in the Exuma Land and Sea Park and riding the ‘washing machine' – a natural tidal propulsion through the mouth of the creek.
Exuma in the Bahamas offers some of the most prime pieces of Bahamas real estate. Second homes are scattered throughout the cays with a concentration on Great Exuma, which, historically, is one of the most interesting islands in the Bahamas. The ruins of the old cotton plantations, established by the Loyalists who left the Carolinas during the War of Independence, are still to be seen.
