Coldwell Banker Lightbourn Realty joins the international community in expressing its heartfelt sympathy to the people of
Haiti over the devastation spawned by the earthquake of January 12.
The Bahamas, like South Florida, hosts a significant Haitian population, and we know that too many homes in Haiti are flimsy, cobbled together with scraps of metal and other material into the mountains.
Haiti lies to the south east of Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas. It's said that on an exceptionally clear day, residents of the island of Inagua in the southern Bahamas can see the coastline of Haiti.
In the Bahamas, we're fortunate that our islands don't sit on a fault line, but that comfort is overshadowed by our sorrow for our neighbours to the south.
The prime minister of the Bahamas, Hubert Ingraham, has expressed "deep distress" over the tragic event.
Said Mr. Ingraham:"Our hearts go out to the people of Haiti at this time and I have alerted our emergency services to be prepared, along with similar agencies in our sister states in the Caribbean, to render whatever aid we can as soon as possible. We will continue to monitor the situation."
The Opposition spokesman for Foreign Affairs, Fred Mitchell, also expressed concern and encouraged the Bahamas to lead a CARICOM-wide effort to help.
This is a sad day for all of us.
