A group of local investors is working towards presenting a master plan for an $80 million cultural village on Arawak Cay, home to the future port of Nassau.
The village would incorporate a Bahamian theme park, shopping area and entertainment centre styled after Granville Island , the mixed entertainment/industrial facility in Canada.
The developers envisage a project that would give locals 51 per cent ownership in an exciting Bahamas real estate development, according to Gerald Strachan, president and chief executive of Cultural Village (Bahamas).
He said such a development would augment nearby attractions, including the Botanical Gardens, Fish Fry, Fort Charlotte and Ardastra Gardens.
Minister of Tourism Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace said numerous others have expressed interest in the artificial island about one mile west of Bay Street, the town centre.
He told The Nassau Tribune that the government wants to ensure the best use of this prime Bahamas real estate. The size of Arawak Cay increased by 40 acres, using the fill generated from the recently-completed Nassau Harbour dredging. The dredging paves the way for the $70 million port project and relocation of container shipping terminals from downtown Nassau.
Vanderpool Wallace said the financing and having what it takes to complete such a project is a key consideration in obtaining government approval.
