What do Guy Harvey and Bimini Island have in common?
Fishing!
Harvey's a big fan of the tiny island in the southwest Bahamas made famous by Ernest Hemingway. Besides serving up marlin on his trendy designer apparel, Harvey's opened the first of his resorts there.
This is a unique island, which offers luxury homes with resort amenities surrounded by superb big game fishing grounds.
Harvey's hobby, fuelled by Hemingway's pen, became his profession.
A renowned artist, scientist, diver, marine conservationist and explorer, Dr Guy Harvey tells The Bahamas Investor that Bimini played a pivotal role in his journey.
In 1985, the self-taught artist illustrated Ernest Hemingway's classic “The Old Man and the Sea” in pen and ink.
Bimini was a favourite hang-out for the hard drinking, brawl loving Hemingway.
The response to his work was so positive that Harvey decided to make a career out of it. Guy Harvey Inc was born.
Harvey's multi-million-dollar branding empire covers everything from apparel and outdoor furniture to restaurants and wine.
His Guy Harvey Outpost Resorts Ltd last year toasted its first resort opening at the celebrated Bimini Big Game Club. In its heyday, the club pulled a “Who's Who” of guests, including Rita Hayworth, Howard Hughes and Jimmy Hoffa.
A dot in the Atlantic, Bimini boasts the most fertile marine grounds.
The island is awakening with the opening of Harvey's 51 room and 75-slip marina, complimented by a dive facility headed by scuba diving legend Neal Watson. Fly fishing personality Vaughn Cochran heads the bonefishing.
