At 3pm Monday, the Bahamas Met Office warned that Hurricane Irene was moving towards the south eastern Bahamas.

A hurricane warning is in effect for the southern islands of the Bahamas, as well as Turks and Caicos. This means hurricane conditions are possible within 36 hours.

A hurricane watch is in effect for the Central Bahamas, meaning islands in this area, including Long Island and Exuma, may experience hurricane conditions within 48 hours.

At this posting, maximum sustained winds were about 80 MPH with higher gusts. Irene is a category one hurricane and is expected to strengthen during the next few days.

Residents in the Southeast Bahamas have been urged to rush to complete preparations to protect properties.

Residents in the Central Bahamas should start to make the necessary preparations in advance of Irene.

If you live in these areas and you don't have a secure shelter, contact the local administrator to find a suitable haven.

Small craft operators should not venture far from port.

Also, residents of the Northwest Bahamas should closely monitor the progress of Irene and make sure all pre-season precautions have been taken.
