It looks like New England!
How often have we heard this as visitors look upon some of our quaint Bahamas villages for the first time?
Actually, the Bahamas' landscape is much different, but we do share a common thread with New England our historic architecture.
The charming cottages in pretty pastels are scattered throughout the islands in villages such as Dunmore Town in
Harbour Island, and Hope Town and Green Turtle Cay in
Abaco.
The settlers British loyalists who fled America during the War of Independence not only build strong homes, but smart homes. Windows faced the prevailing trade winds and covered porches kept the interior cool, while providing a nice place to relax out of the sun.
These beautiful
homes may also be found in
Exuma where the settlers established cotton plantations.
Today, the Bahamas islands are a happy blend of these historic homes and the finest in luxury real estate.
