There are so many drop down beautiful places in Exuma that we wonder if Jimmy Buffet, a frequent visitor, penned “A Pirate Looks at 40” sitting next to the cannon at the salt beacon overlooking Little Exuma.
With a view of the gorgeous beach below to the east, offshore to the west lies Sandy Cay, where Johnny Depp filmed Pirates of the Caribbean. Depp fell in love with Exuma and bought his own private island.
The Exumas were a favourite haunt for pirates with all their secret coves and bays. Capt. Kidd was a regular.
Little Exuma is one of Exuma's best kept secrets. While most locals and visitors are familiar with the Exuma Cays and Great Exuma, few venture over the short scenic bridge, known as The Ferry, that connects Great and Little Exuma.
In days of yore before the bridge, a ferry boat was drawn by rope across the body of water that separates Great and Little Exuma in pristine Moriah Harbour, a fish and bird sanctuary. Hence, “The Ferry.”
Today, the remnants of the past – salts ponds and plantation and house ruins – dot the island that's home to the Tropic of Cancer beach, arguably the most beautiful beach in the Exumas.
“Wind from the Carolinas,” the classic novel about the cotton plantation era, was based on Great Exuma.
Today the islands are hugely popular for yachting, sailing, diving and exploring. Great Exuma plays host to Sandals' beautiful Emerald Bay resort and second homes are sprinkled throughout the Exuma islands.
