The highlight of our summers is a visit to Abaco.
We leave the “city” of Nassau behind to explore, barefoot, the beautiful Abaco cays – Elbow Cay, Man O War Cay, Green Turtle Cay.
The days take us to the magical barrier reef, believed to be the third largest in the world.
We climb to the top stair of the candy striped lighthouse in Hope Town to take in the sweeping views and then make our way to the Hope Town Lodge for some succulent cracked conch and fries.
At night, we make bonfires on the beaches and watch the shooting stars streak across the sky.
In the “old” days, the park was our Friday night date with a movie projector displaying a scratchy motion picture film on a large screen.
Everyone in the village gathered for the event.
Today the people in the small villages still greet us with a friendly wave when we visit Abaco and lots of things remain the same.
There are new places to visit – FireFly Sunset Resort in Hope Town where chef Gavin Skolnick turns out the tastiest dishes, specialising in fresh seafood delights, and Nippers on Guana Cay overlooking one of the most spectacular beaches in Abaco and where a party's always waiting to happen.
The Cape Cod-like villages are popular second home retreats that offer a welcome respite from the fast pace of everyday life.
