Diana Nyad battled fatigue, jellyfish and seasickness to make history, swimming from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage.
It was her fifth attempt to achieve a 40-year dream.
Nyad, 64, spent nearly 53 hours conquering the sea, landing in Florida on American Labour Day after a gruelling 103-mile journey.
"The Gulf Stream was my friend, and usually it's not," she said. "Usually you're out there going in circles, going east of the Bahamas. This time the Gulf Stream went north, right where I was going."
This gutsy New York native swam from Bimin island in the Bahamas to Florida in 1979.
