The second Monday in October is observed as the Discovery Day holiday and we have a joke that it's the last weekend in the year we island people swim.

This is because we're used to warm water and even the slightest dip in temperature sets us shivering! Our friends from the North love to tease us because by their standards, the water's still warm.

October 12, 1492, is recognised as the date Columbus made landfall in the New World. It is widely believed that during Columbus' first expedition to the New World, San Salvador island here in the Bahamas was the first place he made landfall; he named it San Salvador after Christ the Saviour.

Every day's Discovery Day in the Bahamas. With 700 islands and cays, each one unique, there's so much to discover, whether it's all the secret beaches, bays and coves, or the amazing underwater reefs and mysterious blue holes, or the forts and the plantation ruins of old.

This holiday weekend will be full of fun events, regattas featuring the lovely native sailboats and island home comings; the latter which draw people who live in the city of Nassau to the islands of their birth for merrymaking, feasting and family reunions.

Tons of fun in the islands!
