Green Communities Increase Home Values

Did you know that trees planted within 50 feet of a home can raise property values by nine per cent?

That's just one of the many benefits of greener communities, according to the non-profit organisation, Keep America Beautiful (KAP).

On the flip side, litter drags down property values in communities by seven per cent, a KAP survey found.

Although the surveys relate to the U.S., I am sure statistics would be somewhat similar here in the Bahamas.

Houses within 1/4 mile of a park average 10% higher value in the U.S. And the reclamation and greening of vacant lots has been shown to increase adjacent property values by 30%.

There are numerous benefits to cleaner and greener communities.

Beautification projects bring neighbours together and build pride. Public housing areas with trees and vegetation have shown up to a 50% reduction in both violent crimes and property crimes! This, according to KAP.

Green spaces encourage exercise, while local gardens promote healthy eating habits and better nutrition. Access to public green space has been shown to lower heart rates and reduce stress, and even has been connected to reduced rates of asthma, ADD and skin cancer.

So as we start a New Year, let's double our efforts for a greener Bahamas.

Let's make Bahamas real estate trhe envy of the world!
