Current Settlement on
Eleuthera island in the Bahamas is an unsung gem of natural beauty and wonder.
What the village lacks for in size, it makes up for in colour – from the multi coloured Bahamian homes to the magnificent sea vistas that you have to see, to believe.
Located on an island of exceptional scenery, Current is famed for its powerful, fast moving tidal cut. Visitors come from afar to watch the turbulent tide pour through the deep narrow cut between the settlement and Current Island.
The cut's also a source of recreation for strong divers and swimmers, who love to ride the fast tide, free form. The bottom of the cut is covered in gorgeous sea fans and is home to a variety of fish.
Current is a picturesque village of beautiful beaches, charming vacation homes -
like this lovely waterfront one - and old Loyalist cottages.
You can throw a rock from end to end of “Main Street,” a ribbon of a road sprinkled with local homes painted in the vibrant colours of the Bahamas and weathered Colonial cottages.
Eleuthera island is soaked in history.
The word “Eleuthera” means “freedom” in Greek. It was here that a brave band of English Puritans called the “Eleutheran Adventurers” settled in the 1640s, fleeing from religious persecution in Bermuda.
Eleuthera is studded with loads of powder white and pink (yes, pink) sand beaches, cliffs and caves. It's been a favourite retreat for the Royal family – Prince Charles and Princess Di honeymooned here - and other international celebrities.
In this column, we feature an Eleuthera home that showcases sweeping sea vistas. It has a lovely sheltered beach that opens to the sea and a nice white sandy swimming bottom. High tide brings a natural wading pool that's great to lounge in with a frosty drink.
