Islands Magazine has ranked Great Exuma in the Bahamas as the 6th best island to live on in the world.
We've long held that the Exuma chain of islands is the most beautiful in the Bahamas with magnificent real estate offerings, so we'll be the first to admit a bias. Speaking of fantastic Exuma real estate ops, check out this Grand Isle Resort Villa listing.
And we're not alone. Sandals, the high-end all-inclusive resort chain, opened their flagship property on Great Exuma earlier in the year.
But let's see what grabbed Islands Magazine.
The editors say this sun kissed island surrounded by the most dazzling turquoise sea is great for retirees. That's because if you're not planning to work, residency permits are a lot easier to get.
Besides, if you get bored, you can “work” on your tan or on the golf course.
With an investment in Exuma real estate of $500,000 or more, you'll get accelerated consideration for a residency permit.
Islands Magazine notes that you can buy an inland cottage for less than $650,000 or a dream home for over $1 million.
And it touts the life of waking up to the sound of the sea, sailing to a gorgeous deserted beach and enjoying BBQ chicken at Chat ‘n Chill on nearby Stocking Island as part of the Exuma lure.
Our real estate reps are far from retirement and we all love Exuma. As Bahamians who've been visiting Great Exuma for more than 30 years, we can tell you there's a lot more to do on what at first appears to be a sleepy second home island destination for Americans and Europeans.
We love to dive the magnificent reefs and look for turtles and spotted rays. Spear fishing's a favourite pastime and there's nothing so satisfying as grilling fresh fish or lobster (in season) on the beach. No fish? No problem. Stop at the Peace n' Plenty beach hut on Stocking Island across the harbour for a cold beer and one of Dora's yummy conch burgers. After that, we like to climb The Beacon to burn off the calories and enjoy the panoramic view.
Moriah Harbour is a beautiful protected eco system of waterways and isles just a short skip from George Town. It's teeming with birds and juvenile fish and makes a great adventure.
Our all time favourite is cruising the outer Exuma cays. Words simply can't describe the beauty of this island necklace, which embraces the Exuma Land and Sea Park – the world's first sea park – and its extraordinary no-take marine life. Johnny Depp has a home on one of these islands. David Copperfield also owns a luxury home and resort in Exuma.
And if the weather's rough, it's fun to settlement hop across The Ferry bridge to postcard pretty Little Exuma where the bone fishing's great and homes the colour of coral dot the narrow roadside. Check out Santana's Bar and Grill for their fried snapper and cracked lobster while you're there.
Or, in the opposite direction, travel to scenic Mount Thompson and beyond. Stop off at Steventon at Big D's for their mouthwatering conch dishes.
Second home owners like to hang out at Augusta Bay for drinks and spicy “burl fish,” a Bahamian specialty of tender chunks of fish in a spicy broth with potatoes, fresh lime and hot red pepper.
And if night time's your thing, check out the Friday night seaside dances at the historic Peace n' Plenty boutique hotel (the old Minns' homestead), or party with the locals on weekends at the Fish Fry in George Town. We love the bar at Peace n' Plenty with colourful names from old boat wrecks, such as Fascinatin' Bitch.”
