As of July, expect new laws that will enhance the use of Bahamas real estate.
According to Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham, the laws will provide a long term vision for the planning and development of real estate in the Bahamas, with a focus on environmental sustainability.
The Planning and Subdivision Act, 2010, which is currently before Parliament, will go a long way towards regulating the use of land in the Bahamas.
Mr. Ingraham says we want to live in a regulated society with peace and quiet in our homes.
He's right. We don't want our neighborhoods turned into commercial establishments unless this conforms to clear rules.
A Bill for a planning and subdivision act was introduced in Parliament last year, but was withdrawn and replaced with the current one after factoring in public feedback.
The Bill is designed to increase an awareness of the fundamental values of the Bahamas' biodiversity, as well as our natural ecosystems, and to help build a national consensus to protect and restore them.
Mr. Ingraham says his government wants to promote sustainable development and the appropriate use of sound environment technology. At the same time, he says the Bill promotes accountability, transparency and good governance.
Development over the years has too often been ad hoc with businesses springing up in residential areas. Mr. Ingraham says his government will rationalize the use of Bahamas real estate and determine zoning for the various areas.
We welcome the push for more orderly and sustainable development.
